If you want to run Kali Linux without using dual-booting or virtualization on Windows, you can use the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). With WSL, you can run a Linux distribution alongside your current Windows installation without having to use virtualization or dual-booting. As far as I know, WSL 2 is the most recent version, as of my last knowledge update in January 2022. So today’s blog we can go through step-by-step “Run Kali Linux Without Dual Boot or Virtualization on Windows”.
1. Enable WSL:
Open PowerShell as Administrator and run the following command:
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestart
2.Enable Virtual Machine Platform:
- Still, in PowerShell, run:
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:VirtualMachinePlatform /all /norestart
3. Download and Install the WSL 2 Linux Kernel Update Package:
Visit the WSL 2 Linux Kernel Update Package page and download the MSI package. Install it.
4. Set WSL Version to 2:
wsl --set-default-version 2
5. Install Kali Linux from the Microsoft Store:
Open the Microsoft Store. Search for “Kali Linux” and select the one published by “Kali Linux.” Click on “Install.”
6. Set Up Kali Linux:
Once installed, launch Kali Linux from the Start menu. Set up a username and password when prompted.
7. Update and Upgrade Kali Linux:
Open the terminal in Kali Linux and run the following commands to update and upgrade the system:
sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade
Now, you should have Kali Linux running within the Windows Subsystem for Linux on your Windows machine.
